Toshiba adds advanced access security and built in hardware data encryption features to its high end line of 2.5-inch, 7,200 RPM Serial ATA storage products with the MKxx61GSYD series hard disk drives. The new self encrypting drive (SED) provides government grade AES-256 hardware encryption incorporated in the disk drive's controller electronics. Based on the widely endorsed Opal Security Subsystem Class (OPAL SSC) specification from the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), the MKxx61GSYD enables secure and quick deployment of encryption on commercial notebook and shared desktop PCs to protect confidential information. Targeted at security sensitive applications, the drive's built in hardware encryption offers benefits that go beyond software encryption solutions. The government grade encryption increases security for data that resides on the storage media, reducing cost and promoting simplicity. The Toshiba AES-256 encryption algorithm implementation is certified by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) through its Cryptographic Algorithm Validation Program (CAVP). In addition, the Toshiba MKxx61GSYD SED provides features to enable secure remote administration, using capabilities such as those provided by Intel's Active Management Technology (AMT). With SED, data is encrypted as it is loaded, providing both a faster and more secure deployment process. The MKxx61GSYD is compatible with leading third party security management applications for notebook and other client PCs, allowing seamless integration of SEDs within existing software encryption deployments. Unlike software encryption, which is dependent on CPU performance and system memory capacity, hardware encryption occurs inside the MKxx61GSYD at full storage I/O speeds, ensuring that users will experience no reduction in application performance due to the encryption process.
